Clinical Research in Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiometabolic Disease

Dr. Pittas is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Tufts U. School of Medicine, an Adjunct Associate Professor of Nutrition and Policy at Tufts U. Friedman School of Nutrition, Science and Policy and a Center Scientist at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts U. 

His major research focus is in the prevention of type 2 diabetes. His research projects on the role of vitamin D on cardiometabolic disease are as follows:

  1. Vitamin D and Calcium Supplementation for Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes (CADDM study, www.caddm.org). This is a randomized controlled trial of vitamin D and calcium supplementation in participants with glucose intolerance at baseline. Primary outcome is change in Disposition Index, measured by the IVGTT.  Supported by NIDDK (R01, PI Pittas)
  2. Vitamin D and Incident Type 2 Diabetes. This is a case-control study nested within the Nurses Health Study to examine the association between plasma 25-hydroxyvitmain D and incident type 2 diabetes. Supported by NIDDK (R21, PI Pittas)
  3. Vitamin D and Cardiometabolic Disease. This is an observational study within the DPP/OS study to examine the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and incident type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Supported by NIDDK (R01, PI Pittas)
  4. Vitamin D Supplementation for Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes in African-Americans. This is a randomized controlled trial of vitamin D supplementation in African-Americans with glucose intolerance at baseline. Supported by American Diabetes Association (PI Harris)
